One of the greatest benefits of getting my pilot licences in 2011 and 2012, is that we can zip away to different corners of South Africa without too much fuss and can go far for a weekend getaway.
This weekend 8 of us in 3 Sling aircraft from Johannesburg and Durban took a mere 1 hour and 30 minutes flight to Clarens in the Golden Gate, Eastern Free State province where we had an awesome time in this quaint artist and tourist town. En-route there we stopped at the Waffle Hut near Winterton in the northern Berg for breakfast and spent Friday and Saturday night at Shumba farm outside Clarens. Saturday we spent a day in the town, sampling beers, downing shooters and cocktails and eating German curry wurst and much more. What a way to spend a weekend with magnificent scenery around, incredible flights in our Sling aircraft and great company.
A welcome dip in the farm reservoir in the heat of the day |
The scenery from the deli balcony in Clarens |
Windmills, farmhouses and a taste of yesteryear |
Around the poolside at the Protea Hotel where we had a compulsory dip in their poolside bar/barside pool. |
The road home to the farm as the sun was setting |
The view from the air over Clarens |
Mountains, mountains and more as the Drakensberg and Maluti mountains separate South Africa from Lesotho |
A few too many clouds on the way home saw us picking our course judiciously to keep in visual sight of the ground |
A fine day in the air over the north-western part of our province on the way home |
In sight of home as we arrive back over Durban |
A painting in Clarens reminded us of home |
