Crazy Birthday

The craziest part is turning 55... wtf, where have all the years gone?!!

My birthday started off with a 4.15am wake-up to get to Westville by 5 and in the air with Louis in his Savannah at Cato Ridge by 6. The idea was to fly to Johannesburg to deliver his plane to his buyer, pick up my plane at The Airplane Factory and fly back together in my plane in time for a family birthday dinner.

The dinner happened on Sunday night instead and the luncheon with my mom and our aunts and couzins went ahead without me.

Best sunrises

There is something glorious living near the sea.. just to see the magnificent sunrises over the Indian Ocean as well as incredible moon rises at full moon.

East London

I did a quick jaunt to East London this week with my mate Louis to have his plane fixed at the factory there. It was also a chance to land at my favourite landing strip at Port St Johns, do a low fly-past of the hole-in-the-wall along the Wild Coast and also visit my mates grave-site in East London's West Bank cemetery.. prime spot on the top of the hill where the lighthouse casts an eerie torch over the tombstones.

Family Dinner

Llewellyn's Dad and Karen were over from the States, so it's about the only time I get to make bread-and-butter pudding so we all tucked in..

Good Food and Wine

We enjoy the annual Good Food and Wine Show and Llewellyn, Kate-Lynn and I sampled the wines and snacks last night. Yummy!

The Protea is South Africa's National Flower and this one from the Show last night is a beaut.. you can see why it's our favourite.

Sunday fun

Awesome Sunday. Got up late, breakfast in bed!!, then wandered down to Virginia and had a quick fun flight in the plane to King Shaka International where I did a touch-and-go, slipping in after an SAA Airbus. Then a few drinks and pizza at Craft and then afternoon tea with Llew's mom at her new Mount Edgecombe home.

A little BMW parked outside Craft.. sort of matched my shirt and shorts..ha ha

Dinner with guests

Our guests who are staying at the guesthouse for 7 weeks.. Josh from Boston and Fede from Spain came over for a braai last night and we were joined by Kate and James. I had the chance to perfect my chocolate fondant for dessert.. got it just right with the liquid choc oozing out, so yummy! Kate cut the strawberries into perfect heart shapes, so sweet.

Durban July Races

As a member of the Durban Turf Club I get free tickets to the July Handicap races, Africa's premier horseracing event, and at R400 for the tickets, we definitely were not going to miss out on some of the action. We are a stone's throw from there so it's quick to walk down. Sadly my July winners were not! The 13th race (see 4th pic down) was hugely entertaining though - as soon as the last horse race is over, it's traditional for the guys to leap over the fence and line up for a naked 100m dash to the finish. This year they were joined by a few brave girls too.

Out in Africa - on our doorstep

A weekend away with mates to a fly-in safari destination.. this is what we planned for the long-weekend and had some fun exploring our own country and our own Province, an 80 minute flight in our plane up north to Mkuze... Africa on our doorstep.

Sitting in the back of the game drive vehicle as we scoured the landscape for the big 5

Fever trees, known as such because they are usually found near water, as were the malaria mosquitos, so the early settlers thought it was the trees that had something to do with the "fever", not realising it was in fact the mosquitos.

The days were roasting hot but the nights and mornings freezing, this being the heart of winter.. nothing a huge log fire and a captain and coke would not fix. The evening dinner at the Zebra Hills Game Reserve were served in the boma, open to the sky and with a central wood fire.
More game drives... we saw zebra, giraffe, Buffalo, Waterbuck, Nyala, Impala, warthog and a croc. Others saw lions, leopard and rhino as well.

The game drive made a compulsory wine stop!!

The sights of Africa.. beautiful skies, game wondering around and on the tracks, the glimmer of the moon by night and a lodge full of stuffed animal heads.

We stayed at the Zebra Hills lodge in the game reserve. Thanks Lin and Kevin, wonderful hosts who looked after us so well. We flew in with mates to the Mkuze airfield on Friday in 3 aircraft... see more about the flying on my separate blog Do Eagles Dare by clicking on the link.
